About This Lesson

In this listening exercise, you'll hear people talking about live music, concerts, and how often they go. You'll practice vocabulary related to performances and adverbs of frequency.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn words: performer, supported by, downtown, occasionally, market square, hard to explain
  • Identify music genres mentioned in the video
  • Practice adverbs of frequency (rarely, once a year, occasionally, etc.)
  • Build advanced sentences with "I think I like...", "I really love...", etc.

Pre-Listening Task

Match the words with their definitions:

Listening Task

A. Which music genres are mentioned in the video? Click to select.
After "Check Answers": Blue = you missed this one, faded = not needed.
B. Drag each person's name to the correct frequency zone. (Renae appears twice — each must go to a different zone: 4-5 times a year and once or twice a day.)
C. Make these sentences more fancy. Match the beginning (left) with the ending (right).
Simple sentences:
  • I like pop.
  • I love musicals.
  • Rock is my favorite.
  • I want to see Metallica.
  • I want to see McCartney.
  • Street music isn't our culture.

Drag a piece from left to a matching piece on the right (or vice versa). Green = correct pair, red = wrong.

Grammar Focus: Talking About Frequency and Preferences

Notice how speakers describe how often they do things:

  • Rarely / once a year: "I rarely go to concerts, maybe once a year." (Annika)
  • Once a year: "I usually go to concerts maybe once a year." (Matt)
  • Occasionally: "I go to concerts occasionally." (Ed)
  • Not very often: "I don’t go to concerts very often." (Catherine & Agata)
  • 4-5 times a year / once or twice a day: "I go to concerts probably four or five times a year ... unless I’m in London, then I go once or twice a day." (Renae)

Also useful expressions: I think I like..., I really love..., My favourite... is..., I’d love to see..., I would most like to see...

Try It Yourself

Write about your music preferences:

Use these phrases:

  • I really love...
  • My favourite... is...
  • I’d love to see...
  • I would most like to see...

Example: I really love rock concerts. My favourite band is Muse. I’d love to see them play live someday. I would most like to see a show at the Royal Albert Hall.
